The Contented Angler "The Genuine Fly Shop"
|
Cyber Selling - It's the new way of doing business. It's funny, and actually interesting to see
the desperate measures one will take to sell a fishing rod. We had a shop and you all know
who it is, call suppliers and not give us any product. If the supplier is dumb enough to fall for
these underhanded tactics. we simply drop the product. I guess if I had to make a good living
doing this, I would be the same way. Here's how it's done.
First you have to forget about everything fly fishing stands for and customers cannot be
friends. This is just a few investors in business and they could care less whether they are
selling fly fishing equipment or pots and pans. Your first step is to get listed on every dealer
web page. There is no investment required, in fact, what makes this so great is that you don't
even have to stock the product. The unsuspecting individual surfing the web sees you are the
closest dealer and pays you a visit. This is when you hear the famous words: "We don't have
one but we can get you one". Chances are very good that there may not be even one sample
in the store! You never do get to see the product. There is a shop that has been in business a
long time and this is exactly how they operate.
The next step is to have someone build you a website. You can make it look like you have a
fly fishing warehouse that is two blocks long if you wish. That's all there is to it. No
investment required.
I scratch my head and wonder where is the reward? How do you get to meet people? The
monetary reward is hollow and temprorary. How is it enjoyable? You are back in the rat race
and all that matters is the bottom line. Who wants to do something that isn't rewarding? You
have to know absolutely nothing about the history, tradition and the good things that fly
fishing has to offer to only look at it as an investment.
I have to get some kind of reward from this and that reward is meeting people, making new
friends and hearing about their fishing adventures. We also need to do charitable acts without
letting the whole world know we are doing them. it's not a used car lot, it's fly fishing and we
always have to keep that in mind.
I don't have to make a good living from doing this, I've already spent 30 years in a steel mill
and that is the secret to enjoying it. I don't have to lie to people, I don't have to devise ways
to get them in the door. I don't have to be a salesman. When you can operate like this, you
get the pure enjoyment from doing it. I want to fish with you. Most want to sell you something
and say Goodbye. I want a freindship out of this deal.
No one knows fly fishing tradition the way we do and it's not about the product you stock, it's
about the kind of person you are and everyone feels it when they come in here. it feels
different because you are not used to the way it once was. We hold on to our honesty and
integrity with all of our might, because once you lose your integrity, you don't get it back. if
we had to make big money doing this, I wouldn't be here. I'm not a salesman, I'm a fly angler,
and you can't be both.
"But let me tell you that an angler's occupation is a good cure dissuadeth us from haste and leadeth us away from feverish anxieties into those ways which are pleasantness and those paths which are peace. For an angler cannot force his fortune by eagerness, nor better it by discontent. He must wait upon the weather, and the height of the water, and the hunger of the fish, and many other accidents of which he has no control. If he would angle well, , he must not be in haste. And if he be in haste, he will do well to unlearn it by angling, for I think there is no surer method."
