8/11/11 - Our weekly trip to the Little Juniata. Finally some
cooler weather and the water was cool and flow was
adequate. The trout didn't seem to be interested in the #16 -
#18 BWO's that were playing over the fast water. Better to
splat a hopper or large Ant on the surface at this time of the
year anyway. We would deal with the BWOs later with a
special soft hackle that we use for this emergence. We
finished the evening with 19 trout and all were healthy and
released in good shape.

I also spent some time trying a new, not yet released,
"Competition Nymph line" from Cortland so this was not all
play and no work.
If you look at this poor quality picture closely, you will see
the midge larva on the point of the hook. This isn't the first
time this has happened. I now have a good imitation of
this larva. Can you imagine how many of these larva must
be in the stream to manage hooking one!
If these midge larva are still available next week, they should
provide great fishing fished on a clear intermediate line and
some 7X or 8X Stroft tippet. A tungsten bead is the only way
to natuarally get this small fly into the feeding zone.
However, these fish aren't exactly brilliant so you can have a
good enough day with hoppers or ants.
