| I see a web trend. If I could fish as well as I do this, I would be much better off! You can go with the flow of these trends or you can fight the current and go against them and fade away. I see a trend where many distributors are now opening their own online factory store. And why shouldn’t they? What if you invented a product and were told that you can only sell it here or there. It’s the company’s product and they have the right to do what is best for the company. No one should have the power to dictate to the consumer where they have to buy a product. Mr. Corruption has left the area and the days of the sales rep making deals with stores is quickly coming to an end. These deals never benefited the consumer. What if you only had one place to buy a car? The distributor telling you that “you have to buy the car here, whether you like or trust the people or not.” We even had a shop call a distributor and tell them not to send us any product. They have to live with themselves, knowing they do not represent anything that fly fishing stands for. The outdated motto “protecting our dealers” is no longer going to fly with the consumer. We have made great headway in this area and companies are coming to their senses. There are only a few companies left that cling to this anti consumer policy. How many Chevy or Ford dealers do you visit before you but that new car? You have the right to buy it from people you want to do business with. You should have the same choice with any other product. We don’t have socialism yet. There is only one company that makes vises still clinging to this anti-consumer policy. They are going to dictate to you where you must buy. All they are doing is forcing you to go somewhere else and buy something else. And they think they are right ! They are not concerned about the working man or woman. We welcome the online company store and the advertising it provides along with adding another choice for the consumer on where to buy. If you choose to buy from the online store instead of us, that is our fault. We’ve done something wrong. Having spent 30 years in a steel mill, I know how hard the people in our local communities work. I know what it is to work for a living. My conscience won’t let me steal your money. Fly fishing is unique in that ; doctors, lawyers, laborers, office workers all leave their credentials on the bank when they enter the stream. The river is the greatest equalizer. The consumer deserves and should demand a choice on where to spend his or hers hard-earned money. The online store is another convenient choice that you deserve. Don’t let someone dictate to you where you have to buy something. Honest companies don’t play the “Protecting our dealers” game. What is the next web trend? It’s too early to tell, but it’s out there waiting. One thing we can say for sure is that trends come and go. Lets just hope the scales continue to tip in favor of the consumer. |
